Researchers have long known that naked mole rats don’t get cancer or tumors. The ugly little rodents can live to over 30 years of age and yet no naked mole rat has ever been seen to develop a tumor. Recent investigations have uncovered the fact that they produce an oversized form of a substance called hyaluronan, and that these extra-large molecules inhibit cells from growing out of control.
This discovery opens the door to incredible benefits for humanity. For instance, more than 1 billion cell phones are sold each year. These little radiation-emitting boxes will spend their lives cradled against people’s ears or riding in hip pockets, where their constant radiation is likely to cause untold numbers of tumors in future years. Given the naked mole rat’s famously stretchy and flexible skin, it can easily be turned into a cancer-absorbing cell phone cover.
